Being a notorious hacker is kind of like being a gossip, except she wants all the dirty details and not just the interpersonal drama. Anything someone wants to keep a secret, Root is drawn to like a moth to flame. In the terrible, tragic absence of the internet, she's forced to uncover things here the old-fashioned way. So-and-so having an affair couldn't matter less to her, except that it might be a lever to manipulate or a connection that's relevant to know later.

She appreciates that he answers, isn't ashamed or trying to hide. It prompts some more give out of her than she'd planned.

"Total coincidence," she says agreeably and meaning the opposite, her and Bear trotting along after Bigby at a good clip. "Just like me and Shaw must be a coincidence. That's my 'someone', by the way -- do you two know each other?"

It's much more expedient to ask everyone else rather than try to pry details out of Shaw, and this serves the dual purpose of Root learning who Shaw's allies are and placing herself as one of them immediately.
