Tales From The Northern Territories #5

TALES FROM THE NORTHERN TERRITORIES #5

Greetings, Interlopers! Welcome to another of your bi-monthly updates, known as Tales From The Northern Territories! The purpose of these little ‘newsletters’, is to touch base with players on how things are going within the game and the fallout of the event of the previous month. In addition, these updates will also provide some extra information on NPCs, along with any additional happenings that might be going on within the game — which may be hints towards the upcoming Test Drive Meme!

Before we jump into things, here’s some dates for your diary for this month:

Activity Check — 1st - 5th
Special June Event Plotting — 1st - 3rd
Special June Event — 5th
IC/OOC Meme — 15th

First up: some announcements / housekeeping:

CONTENT: As a reminder, there will be no TDM this month. In addition, with there being no TDM, that means there will be no application round this month. Players may still play out from the May event, or create their own open post for more general posts. There will also be a Special June Event, the details of which will be dropped soon!!

We hope you enjoyed your Hearts Meme last month! This month, players will have their bi-monthly CR Meme.

INFORMATION: A new NPC is being added to the NPCs page: the Forest Talkers and their mysterious leader — with information discovered about the Forest Talkers themselves discovered thus far. In addition, information on Nor'pogo has been added to the Areas Page, under the Lakeside Resort section!

HOUSEKEEPING: A reminder for players that we have both a Character Location Tracker for players to use to show where their characters are each month. I will link it here, but it can be found on the Areas Page. In addition, Nico has very kindly put together a Character Impressions Sheet for players to put down first impressions/basic general knowledge of characters. While linked here, this can be otherwise found on the Navigation pages.

MAY’S EVENT

THE ENDS JUSTIFY THE MEANS: It’s been a bit of a mixed reaction towards Young Bill’s proposal with the Forest Talkers, with Interlopers differing in opinions on the best approach. There are, however, some general points:

— Interlopers generally believed that Forest Talker caches should be taken, with particular focus on ammunition, tools and medicine caches. While a lot of Interlopers did not wish to take food caches, and did not want to starve the Forest Talkers out, some Interlopers did so anyways — and thus there has been a serious dent in Forest Talker supplies.
— Interlopers generally supported attempts of peaceful communication with Forest Talkers. While any in-person confrontations did not seem to go anywhere, Interlopers who left notes will find that notes would be taken and the untouched caches would be moved elsewhere if they returned later on.
— Interlopers generally opposed kidnapping a Forest Talker out of fear of retribution/retaliation. However, some Interlopers are still keeping this on the table in the future — and may takes steps to enact on this plan.
— Interlopers largely supported fortifying Milton in case of a Forest Talker attack, whether this is by physical fortifications, extra patrols, etc.
— Interlopers largely opposed outright destroying the Forest Talker group, and possibly with good reason, given how well-armed the group is and what little is known about them.

SACRIFICIAL OFFERINGS: The beast of the Lake remains and will be a fixed part of Lakeside. Nor’pogo will still appear to Interlopers who come onto its lake. While it remains very much unkillable, its functioning remains the same, and will demand payments in the form of sacrifices for use of its lake — but will otherwise leave Interlopers alone.

GLIMMERFOG: Glimmerfog still seems to continue into June, meaning Interlopers can still get sick if they are caught out within it, but instances of it seems to wane as the month goes on.

AND NOW... THE WEATHER

DAYLIGHT: As the clock hits midnight on June 1st, what should be the start of the midsummer month, and thus a time of constant daylight… does not happen. There is no daylight. The skies darken to an eerie (and familiar) green gloom of a strange half-light. The skies are starless, moonless. Something is coming. And once it has come, the gloom remains — the world will not return to normal.

Following Midsummer, when Enola brings an end to the constant green gloom — daylight hours will return to normal daylight remaining constant for a time before the darkness of light slowly begins to come once more. The only reprieve being the odd cloudy days or snowstorms, where the skies darken enough to dusk.

WEATHER: While instances of fog (and thus Glimmerfog) will continue on through early June, this particular fog will eventually clear. Following this, the weather is incredibly calm — the world is still, almost suspended in time. There is a perpetual chill in the air, and it feels incredibly bitter out. No light. No warmth.

Following Midsummer, when Enola brings an end to the constant green gloom — days are generally clear and bright throughout the end of June and July — and the weather is as pleasant as it’s ever going to get. Days are calm, with very few small blizzards and snowfall. There is a warmth in the air, and it is probably the warmest that Interlopers have perhaps ever felt in their time here.

However, something feels… off. The strange atmosphere from the Darkwalker’s influence is replaced with another kind of tension. Into July, the air feels slightly stifling at times, as if the pressure is all off. The skies will often appear stormy — with rumblings of thunder heard in the air. There seems to be little, if any, progress on the thaw. On the rare clear days, sundogs can often be seen when the sun hits the horizon just right.

Aurora Frequencies: There are no Auroras.

Into late June/early July, however, the skies may darken enough for Auroras to be seen weakly in the sky — it appears that something is building.

NEW HAPPENINGS IN JUNE

WILDLIFE: From the 1st, the wildlife of the world begins to disappear, retreating further into the deepest, darkest parts of the wilds. Game will be increasingly difficult to find, and hunting parties will need to go out much further than before. Even then, it will still be scarce. Hunger may become a concern for Interlopers as time passes.

Following Midsummer, wildlife will still be hard to find for another month or so — but animals will slowly begin to come out of hiding. It seems that the food issues haunting Interlopers are not quite over just yet but it’s looking promising.

AURORA FEATS: Interlopers with Aurora Feats will find the following:

— Free Runner: With fresh game becoming scarce, Free Runners run the most risk of starving. The lack of food will cause irritable moods and exhaustion in them, or they may find their need for more calories will put extra strain on the community — with their fellow Interlopers growing frustrated and agitated with them.
— Lightbringer: With the increasing cold and perpetual dark, Lightbringers will be pushed to the brink of exhaustion with a demand on them for fire to chase away the cold. They also run the risk of causing more accidental fires through emotional outbursts.
— Aurora Call: While Lightbringers and Free Runners will be facing physical exhaustion, those with Aurora Call will be facing mental exhaustion. They will be most prone to feelings of melancholy and isolation and their mental and emotional well-being will be all the more fragile.

Following Midsummer, Interlopers with Aurora Feats will slowly find their abilities' negative affects easing — although the issue of food will still remain for Free Runners.

NPCs

METHUSELAH: Methuselah will be returning to Milton early in the month, rather than his usual middle of month. He comes regrettably empty-handed. He is deeply unsettled by the state of the world, and he will come to find that his sense which helps him tell of new Interlopers arriving has told him that none will arrive this month — which he will share with Interlopers.

For the month, Methuselah will stay in Milton. While another mouth to feed, he will get stuck in with helping Interlopers: with tasks such as gathering firewood and foraging. He will also assist in hunting parties in both the Milton Wilds and Lakeside in any attempts to find fresh game — using paths he knows when venturing further into the wilderness.

In quieter moments, he can be found alone in town. Sometimes in the Community Hall, sometimes in the Milton Basin. Other times, he is found in the churchyard at the graves of Interlopers lost to the Darkwalker. Much like before, he will place trinkets there: Ptarmigan feathers and bird carved in wood. He will be found sitting in a contemplative silence, or perhaps he may be gently speaking: sometimes they sound like some kind of prayers or some kind of funerary rites, other times it almost sounds like stories.

Following Midsummer, Methuselah will focus on helping tend to any wounded Interlopers and help in dealing with the dead. He will still go out with hunting parties with Interlopers in hopes of finding game.

YOUNG BILL: For late May and into early June, Young Bill has his hands full. Scout has given birth to a litter of puppies, fathered by Diefenbaker — and he does not want to leave her all that much.

While he is thankful for Interlopers helping him in tackling the Forest Talker caches, and more open to visitors and doesn’t mind people needing respite from the cold and to see some very adorable puppies — he is on edge with the current state of the world. He will comment that maybe this is the end of the world after all, and the Darkwalker might just be here to devour the world, like in the stories. He is still offering copies of maps to the Interlopers.

Provided someone can watch over Scout and her litter, he will also assist Interlopers in hunting trips in the Lakeside area and will offer his knowledge of the area in hopes of finding game in the more remoter areas — marking out these places on maps where he believes Interlopers may have the best luck in hunting.

Following Midsummer, Young Bill will continue to go out with hunting parties with Interlopers in hopes of finding game, provided someone can look after the puppies.

ENOLA: Enola is silent. There is no way to reach her. Not even those with Aurora Call can reach out to her.

Following Midsummer, Enola can be heard during any Auroras in radio/tv static and even on the very air itself. She may whisper names, or utter soft apologies for not being there sooner. She will ask Interlopers to hold on a little longer and that a storm is coming.

FOREST TALKERS: The Forest Talkers have gone to ground. Their presence in the Lakeside area has greatly diminished with the new month — and they will not stray too far from the Old Hunting Lodge.

However, small groups of Forest Talkers, which often include their apparent leader: a tall man in white tactical gear, donning a large deer skull, can be found out in the wilds. They will keep their distance from Interlopers, and appear only to be watching the groups they find. They will not interact or speak with Interlopers — the leader making silent hand signals to get his group to retreat if Interlopers try to draw too close.

Following Midsummer, the Forest Talkers will start to come out of their laying low. They will try to disrupt Interloper/Methuselah/Young Bill’s attempts at hunting, by sabotaging traps, stealing game or purposely spoiling it. Notes left by Interlopers back in May offering peace to the Forest Talkers can be found pinned to the Resort Camp Office — scrawled over it with the words: THE YAWNING GRAVE HAS OPENED.

Just making sure: No new NPC arrivals in June either, correct? Asking for those characters who have been trying to find a pattern in arrivals.

1. with game becoming scarce, will there be any significant difference in the fish population, or will a pescatarian diet be an alternative for the foreseeable future? edit: oop, disregard! already answered!

2. can interlopers who see the forest talkers using hand signals be able to make attempts to figure out what they mean? (are they simple or complex?)

Am I reading correctly here that Aurora Callers are going to be able to hear other people’s thoughts this month, or is it just like super heightened empathy?

Has Bill faced any more vandalism or attacks on his property since he made his request of the Interlopers?

Around what temp will it be on the warmest days this month? What is the general temp range? Asking to determine if Vasiliy and Kostya would be good to put the grouselets back outside in the coop yet...
