I suppose gossip and such is not unheard of... perhaps especially amongst our line of work... There is a certain distance that might allow a man to speak his mind more towards such things...

[James very much makes a distinction between purposefully spreading false information about someone and simply gossiping, so if they go with that definition then he totally did that on their expedition too. So much gossiping.

He'll just... Not clear up this miscommunication, it's fine.]

Some amount of discussion can be useful in diffusing tension, particularly that which might otherwise develop into resentment.

I see... So it might even be a method meant for the benefit of one's colleagues. To speak honestly... to lighten tensions...

I am not surprised that you would know how to utilise such techniques, Sir. You always had a way with the men on our Expedition — helping them feel more at ease.

[Edward please; don't encourage this and also flatter him at the same time, it's terrible and unwarranted. And, even worse, James is not going to argue because he can very much use the validation, particularly since he did make a purposeful attempt to be approachable.]

It's simply a matter of experience. I'm aware that socializing is not your favorite activity, but it is the best way of learning.
