I'm also brand new to the game but wanted to say hi -- I came very close to tagging Maelle with Teddy here and decided maybe you had enough tags by the point I TL'd, lol.

Teddy does actually know some sign language! It rarely comes up in RP so I forget to even put it anywhere as a skill (though if I had a nickel, etc -- they've been in game with Wrench from Fargo before and used it then). They aren't fluent the way someone who's Deaf and signs, or an interpreter, would be (or even especially close to that level), but they're still decent at it. They took it in school and continue to teach themselves (much more slow a process) to help communicate with certain folks at home who have job-related hearing loss. Teddy learned and passed it back down the line because that was the easiest way to do it, those resources didn't exist at home. So they're not unfamiliar with sharing what they know: mostly basic vocabulary (with some random holes, and some really, really over-specialized things they ...totally had to just look up.)
So, if you're interested in communication being a little easier and less painful intermittently, that could be a thing? Teddy also uses a different form of hand signing with their service dog, which, though it's not the same as ASL, is evident and could be an in.
Not at all a requirement, idk if Maelle is stubborn enough to not want that, but the comment made me think!
Teddy's about 10 years older, but I feel like she'd be concerned enough to be curious and also just kind of relate to being ...tbh both self-conscious and anxious, and acting cocky and overconfident, particularly as a teenager (with some quite obvious gaps in lived experience). Except for the cold she IS very used to being on her own and in a rural area, and is unlikely to treat Maelle like a kid; I'd be happy to throw these two at each other anyway for just ordinary survival. Or both of them being out of their league with weird shit happening, haha.
(I haven't played Clair Obscur -- tho the sheer influx of characters from it around places like Plurk and bakerstreet have definitely left an impression -- but tbh, at the rate I'm getting to any "to watch/read/play" stuff lately, I'm gonna say it's ...better to be spoiled than avoid CR and hope :P Some of my favorite video games (and fandoms generally) have come out of getting attached via RP, deciding I needed to get into the canon, and crying through scenes I knew were coming (*looks meaningfully at The Last of Us*).
