[ His eyes soften. He figures he knows who this is—who else? He doesn't exactly have a wide circle of acquaintances—here or anywhere.

Finding a way out of here will presumably mean going their separate ways, a thought that makes his chest ache, something that he tries not to think about. He wants to go back, he does—but with every passing day that prospect gets more complicated. Going back will mean going back to isolation, too. Going back to the feeling of being the last of his kind, a lone alien trespasser on a hostile planet, not unlike the creature he's found himself partly responsible for.

( And what will Konstantin do? Where will he run? What will he do if there's a medical emergency? ) ]

We'll find a way out. Whatever brought us here can put us back.
