But for what it's worth, I do think you'd probably make someone real happy if you married them.

Ah — that is very kind of you to say. Such things as marriage are not quite.... meant for me, but I appreciate your sentiment.

Hey, you never know? Like, never say 'never'.

[ He gives a soft smile. It isn't something he's spoken about much. ]

Much of it.. is because of my service. Senior officers are not meant for union. One could say that I am to remain married to that, instead.

...It is all right, though. I always accepted that.

Married to the job. [ There's a few nods, understanding. ]

But, like... I guess— didn't you think about after the job? Like when you retired?

[fidior]

I suppose such things rarely touched my mind. And I am not oblivious to the fact that... I have little to offer.

[ He allows a soft laugh. He knows he's not exactly a desirable man... ]

I don't mean that to elicit pity. It is better a man knows where he stands with himself. I was... content.

[ There's some odd awareness that he does frequently refer to his life in the past tense. But... well, he is something dead now. There is no such future for him, even if he should wish for it. ]

[ Kate's squinting a little. Excuse her, Lieutenant—?! ]

... What're you talking about? You have more than just 'little' to offer anyone.

[ SHE WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS SLANDER, EVEN WHEN IT COMES FROM YOU, EDWARD LITTLE. ]

You've got a lot of admirable qualities. You're kind and honest. You're a decent human being and you always try to do the good thing. You work so hard at the things you do. You probably had to be smart enough to become a Lieutenant in the first place. And you're actually kind of handsome?

[ Listen. She's a teenager. But she can recognise physical beauty. ]

That's not 'little to offer', Lieutenant.

[ Ah... it makes him shy, head dipped downwards for a moment, flushing. Such a flow of compliments is... very atypical for his time, and he isn't used to such things at all.

...He also knows that deep down, as much as he wants to be all of the things that Kate lists, he isn't. He is... a failure, a weak thing, and he won't ever be able to remedy what he'd done. His soul is a blackened place, and he loathes himself. ]

You are far too generous to me, Miss Marsh. I appreciate your kindness, and I am glad you have such high opinion of me. I assuredly do not deserve it.

[ Time to... gently get the attention off of himself...! ]

But I suppose you are of the age where such things may be on your mind.

I'm only talking about what I see. I don't think that's me being generous, I'm pretty sure that's just me being honest. [ She's definitely not one to lie, and she's not one for baseless flattery either. ] You do deserve it, I guess sometimes it might be hard for you to see.

[ For, like... a whole lot of reasons. ]

Uh— [ No, Lieutenant. How could you. She actually pauses for a long moment, it's almost comical. ] I mean— I guess? Maybe?

[ Her turn to be all shy.... ]

Yeah. I guess I have thought about stuff like that. What sorts of things I'd maybe consider for myself one day.

[fidior]

[ If only she knew more of his true self. The darkness that taints his soul. Selfishly, he wishes never to expose Kate to it, but some part of him fears it is only a matter of time.

But for now — a shy smile, it's difficult for him to accept such things, and he's looking down for a moment. ]

And... what does it look like? Your future? When you picture it.

[castitas]

Going to college, writing and illustrating children's books — like it'd be cool if I was successful with it all. [ That's... like the dream. ] And— I would like to find someone to spend my life with: get married, have my own family. That's important to me.

[ It's weird. It's like going back in time, in a way. Before the Vortex Party, before everything. But then, it's not really — not with a certain someone here in Milton to remind her of the things she'd like. ]

I'd want him to be someone who's kind and patient. Smart, too. That he'd be someone who shares my faith and beliefs. And he'd have to love me back.

[ Not asking for much, really. ]
