Right and still lacking the correct answer to the spirit of the game. I understand though, some men aren't naturally inclined to curiosity. [It was fully a playful baiting.] That mean there's a marked difference between professor and teacher?

Professor's university, yeah? Anybody can teach.

So not all teachers are professors but all professors are teachers?

Sounds about right. I never went to university, but from what I know, professors have degrees. Teacher's more general.

I've got degrees. Two of 'em actually. I think that's close enough to count.

Nothin' that I think you'll find 'fun' as such, but I've got a Bachelor's degree in both Law Enforcement and in Criminal Justice. Woulda gone for Master's degrees but I needed a job more than the debt of another four years, and it's the minimum required for the job I wanted. Instructor Certification came later. [If he was being fair and honest.]

[Raylan can't help but chuckle.]

Yeah. Standards and shit. Common rules and established understandin's of how things should go. The law is nuanced as hell and we can be held responsible for not followin' 'em.

Well. Your time is certainly different from mine. There are rules, yeah. But most of the police I've dealt with have just been men scraped off the street.

I'm sure that lead to some shit policin'. Not that I look down on the past for bein' where it was at. That shit policin', the effects on a community and trust, that's what lead to standards bein' set and evolving.

You get caught up with your - what, Constabulary? Often? [He was pretty sure that's what Brits called their cops, and 'bobbies' felt.. 1960's somehow.]

[Raylan gives him a wry smile, eyes half-mooned in his amusement.]

Mm-hmm. You seem like the type to have far too much fun to avoid a badge or two. [But he wasn't the type to bust Hickey's balls for nothing; the man hadn't so much as breathed wrong towards or in front of him and even if he did, Raylan didn't go full Marshal unless he was given a reason. Live and let live; there was peace to be had.]

But that's alright. We all gotta come from somewhere.

One man's 'too much fun' is another man's 'honest living,' [ lightly teases the man who's never done a day's length of honest work in his life. Hickey is the sort of man who's notoriously lazy and will happily look for the quickest, most efficient solution to get what he wants.

Sometimes that solution is stabbing people! No biggie! ]

Anyway, not like any of that matters here, yeah? Even if we managed to cobble together something vaguely like a police system, based on what happened last month, half a dozen people would immediately jump up to poke holes in it.

[Fair enough, if there weren't other paths open to a soul. Being poor was a curse on it's own, an expensive damning existence no matter the era. He bobs his head in his agreement of it and hums.]

The Law is only worth what the public will agree and adhere to. They'd all have to come to a compromise and trust me, a few hundred years, that's just as hard to come about findin' as it ever has been so I don't doubt it. [No technological advances or standards there.]

Glad to see that even a hundred years in the future, some things don't change.

[ people will always never be able to come up with a simple compromise. ]
