2. I ventured to the furthest northern point (at the time) with Cmdr. Parry’s expedition to the North Pole.
3. I once spent 3 straight weeks on deck during a series of ice storms in Antarctica.

Did you truly travel so near to both poles?

If.

I did indeed. I never did get to the poles proper, but I was on those voyages. I helped chart the location of the magnetic South Pole.

You've travelled so far… to think that I'm nervous about letting my friend sail to Vinland!

Why were you out in this storm for so long?

Just in the northern hemisphere; only flightless birds in the southern one.

I’m afraid I don’t understand your meaning, madam. I’m a captain by title.

Ah, southern born, by the title of your station. [ a pause. ] As given by your lord or king.

[ all other captains of the guard are southern to sansa, now that jory's dead. same as all dead things frozen in the snow, sansa is frozen in her memories of the past. ]

Why do you call me madam?

Ah, I see. [Some cultural confusion here.] Where I'm from there are very few people who live at the top of the world. My title, however, was bestowed onto me by the Admiralty, the storied institution that commands the Royal Navy.

We haven't had governing lords in quite a long time, though they still exist. I'm named for one, in fact.

[There's a small pause.]

I call you 'madam' because I do not know what you would like to be called. I should rectify that.

[ it sounds like the night's watch, where men stand alike in station and responsibility. sansa nods, though not wholly understanding the man's meaning. she has the idea of it, mostly. ]

Your forebears are lords? Of what house, if I may ask? Should I address you as a lord, ser?

—I'm only a girl. Lyanna, if it pleases to know. I've not known anyone from a royal navy before.

[ technically speaking. ]

Three weeks of it? Not the loveliest of 'hello, welcome to the South Pole' greetings.

Ah, it was a farewell to the South Pole, in fact. One final kick to the arse.

The nerve, honestly. I'd have thought better of its hospitality, though I suppose Antarctica doesn't exactly entertain guests as often as other parts of Earth. Was your time in the North better spent?

Antarctica was unmapped still when we visited, but it was beautiful. The penguins were silly, smelly little creatures - they walked right up to us without second thought.

But I liked the north far better. I journeyed there so often it feels like home.

Ah! Pioneers. Love that. And penguins, they're so social that way — cheeky and delightful. I was quite honored to have a fish flung at me by a pair of them once, when they were in a mad frenzy for a morsel.

What did you love most about the north then? More than only familiarity.

Look at this! You certainly have lived an eventful life, no matter which of these is true. But I gotta ask. What does it feel like to be on deck during an ice storm?

Cold.

Harrowing. I can't recall most of it now, just pieces. My hair went white nearly overnight and my hands wouldn't stop trembling for months after.

Well, I know you've been to Antarctica, at least— [ So that one's pretty safe to think of as the truth. She's not sure about him going to the Arctic with Commander Parry, even if she knows he's been to the Arctic. But it's possible. At any rate: ]
