You would not mind having no children to carry your lineage, my lady? Or... perhaps the quality of the husband would matter?

I have no memories of my mother because giving a king a son was more important than her life.

I know what’s required of a lady, but if there is no danger otherwise it's difficult to call the lack unfortunate.

[ that's fair enough, sansa decides. she's heard tell of so many ladies who die at childbirth, to say little of the babes that don't survive their first two years. ]

I suppose that would be the ideal, to get to choose if or when to have children. My first husband might've thought alike, if... no. No, his father would have insisted.

Children are very precious for some.

My sister’s children are very dear to me, and my own situation requires an heir, but if you are not unhappy with your status I do not pity you.

I fear I am giving away my own answers, however.

I wouldn't think to claim knowledge, if it were not given to me freely.

[ that is to say: she won't guess for herself if the lady randvi prefers not. ]

What would you name them? Your heir.

The name is the father's responsibility. I've barely considered it.

[It would be a lie to say that she hadn't speculated to herself, in that first year of her marriage when things had still seemed like they'd work themselves out. Now she's been alone for so long that sometimes she forgets that she's married at all.]

I doubt he will choose an ancestor name from his Raven side, since we split from the clan. Perhaps from the other.

Quite the responsibility for my lord, that.

[ names carry a weight to them; the higher up the ladder one goes, the heavier such names get.

would that she could forget her marriages as easily.
]

Is he not the sentimental type, your husband? No love for his sire?

Styrbjorn Jarl is a coward.

[It pains her to say, she’d deeply respected her father-in-law once. In many ways, he had taught her to be a leader.]

He decided he was tired of war after he had already won, and abdicated to another king.

[ ...oh. ]

Might be that he had done his people a service, if he knew he was unfit to rule in peacetime. But... his successor, was he known to be fair or just?

[ such is the trouble with heirs: they have minds of their own. ]

Harald Fairhair is known to be an overly ambitious opportunist. He wishes to unite all of the small kingdoms of Norway under his own banner.

Styrbjorn Jarl sold his fealty in exchange for the destruction of the Wolf clan, who had some years ago slaughtered our vassal Bear Clan nearly to a man during a festival. I shed no tears for the Wolves, but his own son's inheritance was too high a price to pay.

[ sansa's similarly unimpressed. ]

He means to be a conqueror. For others to bend the knee to him. An ambition like that is rarely bloodless, and it's always the smallfolk that pays the greater price.

Why not challenge his throne regardless? Would it be too dangerous?

Harald controls a large army - many have either sworn to him or left Norway already - and I do not think my husband’s war chief would have had the heart to take on the man who helped us to eliminate the Wolves. Before her adoption, she was one of the only surviving Bears.

They say that because of the unrest in England, anyone can be a king there, so we opted to begin a new independent branch of the Raven Clan there.
