To understand how things work — with each other? You mean to understand why the snow falls, or why a bird's wings might carry twice the weight of itself?

Where would you even begin?

Exactly! Anything in the natural world... even things we can't actually see with our own eyes. How do they work? Why do they work? What is their relationship to other things? It's all quite beautiful, really.

A lot of the beginning work has to do with numbers — mathematics. Nearly everything can be explained that way — or at least, observed and experimented on.

Would you be willing to teach a girl my age of these things? How might I know how to observe in this manner?

[ Oh — he wasn't expecting such a request, and finds himself pleasantly surprised. He's taught plenty of young men through his time as a military commander, and there are always those starry-eyed youths to approach him now, as a cosmonaut. But this is... different than any of that. He's never really had a young person ask to learn from him, like this. (Maybe he could actually help. It could be nice.) ]

I would be happy to! It's not all as complicated as the books make it seem. The world is very simple, underneath all of its complexities. It's nice to be reminded of that sometimes, I think. [ He smiles again. ]

I think the best way to understand it is to learn about some of the basics. Many of them are easier to demonstrate in person. If you like, we could have a Science session sometime!
