What is a star sign?

A star sign is what constellation you're born under. Everyone's got one. Depending on when your birthday falls, you'll have one of twelve star signs.

How do you determine which one is yours?

[ seeing as seasons work wholly differently in westeros... but sansa remains well too interested. what could be hers? ]

Well, it depends on which month you're born. The day of the month too. The months of the year usually have two star signs that fall on it as the Earth orbits the sun.

So like, Virgo falls from half-way through August into half-way through September, followed by Libra which is half-way through September into half-way through October.

What month were you born? I could probably take a guess at which one's yours.

I was born at the turn of winter before spring, in the 285th year after Aegon's Conquest. [ a very awkward pause as she realises this is absolutely of no help. ] How do you know which month is named so?

By Virgo... does that mean the sign of the Virgin?

It's kind of just... something you're taught? Like in school.

So like there's— [ She starts counting them off on her fingers. ] January, February, March, April, May, April, June, July, August, September, October, November and December. It's July right now.

Yeah. Virgo is the Virgin. Or Maiden. The signs usually have something to represent them. Leo is the Lion, Scorpio is the Scorpion, Gemini is the Twins. That sort of thing.

[ She's thoughtful for a moment. ]

By guessing 'turn of winter', I'm guessing that maybe means around the Winter Solstice? Maybe you're born in December—?

I learned my letters and numbers, my lady. I'm afraid they are the same as you learned. We have twelve moons at the turning to count a year, with each year seeing the false seasons, and the greater seasons counting the changing of age. Or when a king dies, whichever bears greater import.
