I have four by blood, and a fifth by my father's charge. I think you'll like them, especially Jon. He's fastidious, and careful of his belongings.

[ in no small part because her lady mother begrudged jon any and all privileges their lord father afforded him. looking back, sansa understands she's never given jon his due; his life was hard enough, as the bastard of an otherwise famously honourable lord.

that ser levi seems to not believe her is expected, though. sansa's lie isn't a very strong one. ]

No. My mother died when I was still young.

[ She was also a prostitute, though she did in fact want to have Levi. But as far as he's concerned, her job is the least important thing about her, unlike her smile and her gentle voice that keeps fading from his memory at the edges. He wishes he could hold onto it forever. ]

I've had friends who were about as close to me though, I imagine.

My mother carried five children for my father. Three sons and two daughters. A respectable number, some might say. Heirs and spares.

[ Unfortunately, Levi has only ever heard the word "heir" in the context of the rightful Queen in the Walls, so this extra information does little to dissuade him from "Lyanna" being high-born. ]

I've had four best friends over the years. Furlan was the first, always keeping me in check and thinking up ways to make our lives better. Isabel was always looking for adventure; she loved animals and always kept her heart open for a new friend.

They both died.

[ That should paint the picture of the rest of the story, really. ]

Erwin... saved me. He brought me into the light, gave me a purpose and his trust. He was an unmatched strategist, and his reckless gambles usually paid off. He along with many others died to give me a fighting chance.

Then it was just me and Hange left. They're a lot... always experimenting and looking for new ideas and discoveries, loudest voice in the room, though they've lost some of their energy in recent years.

[ too many friends to have died, and so soon. but perhaps ser levi's home is as harsh as sansa's, and death is as commonplace as anything. he certainly doesn't seem dissuaded by the frankness she offers about her own departed. ]

I would much like to pray for them, if yo won't mind it. We could always honour their memory here, even if we're far from our homes.

[ in some ways, it is less harsh. in others, it is harsher. perhaps if sansa's world still had roaming, people-eating dragons, but women were allowed to be soldiers, it would be somewhat similar. ]

... [ There's no place for religion in Levi's life, save for wondering about fate sometimes, but he can understand the purpose of some rituals. He also understands that to someone who believes in it with their heart, this is a kindness offered. ] I don't mind.

[ sansa takes levi's hands in hers, and closes her eyes for a moment. ]

May the Mother give peace, wherever they find rest. May the Crone give its wisdom, in the face of loss. May the Warrior give strength to survive our enemies, and those who might do us harm.

May the Stranger give mercy, in its coming and its going.

[ Unfortunately, right now the only comforting thing to him would be the knowledge that he's going home, and that's not something any of them here have the power to make happen. At least, not yet. ]

[ It's... a little odd to think of them as "friends", per se. She's so young, he can't help but feel a certain responsibility, protectiveness that's perhaps more befitting someone like a guardian than a peer. But he appreciates it. He nods. ]
