Why would a bear god attack you, then? How did it find you, if you did not come upon it?

I joined up for an exploratory voyage with the intent on finding trade routes. We ended up finding an unforgiving wasteland that wants us dead.

A merchant vessel, then, of sorts. My condolences.

[ seafaring is a treacherous thing in westeros. people die a lot. ]

And you had no way of returning home?

[friendsfordinner]

Our ship was frozen in. Said exploratory voyage was up in the north, the Arctic Circle. What should have been a few months of being frozen in the ice turned to a few years.

So far north that it's always winter, then?

[ sansa's definitely judging. certainly it's not the same as home, but there's a reason the wall stands where it does, and why northerners know to leave the wildlings and their lands well alone. ]

Some places aren't meant for people, ser. Might be that it's a lesson learned in the worst way possible. Don't think yourself poorer for it if you managed to survive.

Not always winter. People live there regularly, after all—Arctic's got natives. But it's so far north that it's a piss-poor choice to take a ship if things freeze over.

And they did not warn you of — bear gods?

[ this is taking an unpleasant shape in her mind. ]

The cold does not take kindly to those who wish to tame it. My father taught us that. You can only prepare for it. It is as all northerners know; winter always comes.

I'm sorry your friends were eaten.

They didn't warn us of anything.

[ There's a pause before Hickey points out, ]

A leg is as good as a body; gods bless you if you survive having your leg ripped from you with no maester to mind the injury. If the insects and the wildbeasts don't get you, the fevers will.

No craftsman worth the iron of his tools would set fire to good work, least of all at sea or foreign land. Pride makes fools of men in the worst ways; he might sooner choose to die than give up on his ship. If I must guess, someone else must've lit the fire.

Right answer, but wrong reasoning. No craftsman would set fire to his work, yet the man who set the fire was a surgeon. Falling apart a bit on that 'do no harm' sort of ethos.

A surgeon... is he a kind of healer? Or a maester— a man of faith, or a scholar? [ it sounds like it, if 'do no harm' is part of their vows. ] What were his reasons?

[friendsfordinner]

A healer. The surgeon's the one who patches you up if you're wounded. Setting broken bones, fixing burns, giving you stitches, things like that. As for his reasons? No one really knows.

[clothed]

[ surgeon. another word for healer, here. perhaps different from doctor, then? different healers, like there are dfferent smiths. she thinks she's starting to get it. ]

It must've been hard to trust him with your health, after the fire.

I didn't need to trust him. He was one of the ones who died.

That is a great misfortune, to lose your h- surgeon on a journey so far from your home. My prayers to you and him...?
