[ But that's enough about him. ]
What about you? What do you do? [ "Innkeeper" his ASS. ]

Who says I'm not an innkeeper? [ by all appearances, that's exactly what she is, lalo. ] At least at the present.

[ It's not really that simple- who "runs" the cartel- but that's all she needs to know. For right now.
He's flattered she thinks he would be at the head, though!
He studies her and shrugs. ]
Nobody, nobody. Don't worry about it. [ He puts up his hands, and looks apologetically, maybe even slightly embarrassed at his faux pas. Forgive his dumb ass. ] You like it? Being an innkeeper? I bet you've got some good stories. [ He's not lying about that! Being an innkeeper has to get you some good stories. Right? Lots of interesting people visit hotels.
He considers telling her about a hotel owner he knew once, but he doesn't. Not yet, anyway. Maybe later. ]
And I bet all of your guests like having such a pretty face taking care of them. Eh? Am I right or am I right? [ Is he laying it on a little thick? Maybe! He's partly playing, but he's not being totally insincere. She is pretty. ]

[ It may very well be an indicator of the world Lanfear comes from, but from her perspective, there are very few roles for a man to claim if they are not merchants or farmers or, in even rarer cases, hold a higher level of power.
But she relents, somewhat, when he retreats from prying too deeply into her occupation. ] Some. But, in fairness, I haven't been an innkeeper for very long. I took over the place after the previous owner had a rather unfortunate mishap. [ Said mishap had been Lanfear herself, and the man had mysteriously disappeared — with only one person aware of what had truly happened to him.
Her mouth curves into a slow smile at his flattery. ] They pay on time, which I suppose has more to do with a desire not to disappoint. And few men want to disappoint a woman like me.

Oh, no. I'm sorry to hear that. You know, the innkeeper I used to know, he had an unfortunate mishap too. It's a shame! [ One Lalo and his uncle caused, no less. ]
Yeah... [ He rubs his hand over his moustache. ] Can't say that I blame them.

[ Since he seems accepting of the comparison that he's the equivalent of a prince in his current position, then perhaps she won't be mistaken in assuming that he stands in very close proximity to the seat of power.
But in response to his assessment, she shrugs one shoulder, having at least the sense to look somewhat regretful about that poor innkeeper's fate. ] Well, someone had to take over and give those needy souls in the Foregate a place to lay their heads. [ She says it with the tone of voice that implies she should be praised for her selfless actions, before her head tilts in subtle inquiry. ]
Are you worried about disappointing me?

In a sense, yes. It's a little more complicated than that. There are other people to consider too, in my line of work. But he's my favorite uncle. I'd never let anything bad happen to him. [ Well. Nothing else bad, anyway. Something very bad has already happened to Hector, and it feels Lalo with grief and heartache, not glee. ]
Me? Never. I would never want to disappoint an angel like you.
