Town Meeting

Town Meeting

Town Meeting

With the recent events that have transpired in regards to Young Bill's plan to starve out the Forest Talkers — the eco-terrorist group that has been hounding him and leaving macabre scenes all over the Lakeside area, Interlopers have called a town meeting to discuss what to do on this.

Rather than playing out the Town Meeting, like with the Darkwalker's second attack, consider this post an OOC post of that meeting, for players to share their character's thoughts and feelings on the situation — along with the best approach in regards to Young Bill's proposal.

Players are free to thread out scenes from the Town Meeting in their own event toplevels/open posts if they wish to do so — but this is more of a quick catchall on character's thoughts that's more accessible to everyone — and players can have their characters +1 ideas they agree with!

Please fill out the following form.

EDIT: THERE IS A POLL FOR INTERLOPERS TO VOTE ON

Player Name / Contact: Lorna / [plurk.com profile] repeatandfade
Character Name: Constable Benton Fraser
Character Journal: [personal profile] maintiensledroit

Character Thoughts/Ideas:

— Fraser is horrified by what the Forest Talkers are doing, but he is vehemently against starving them out. Young Bill's already annoyed with him, so he has nothing to lose in terms of that guy's regard.

— He will support plans for peaceful attempts at communication, but only so long as everyone attempting it makes an actual plan, works together, and has multiple avenues for escape/defense should the Forest Talkers show up and get violent.

— To that end, he will also offer himself as an armed companion to anyone attempting to either leave notes for the Forest Talkers or confiscate the contents of caches with the intent to use them for leverage. He will not condone action taken against the Forest Talkers, only defensive measures.

— Fraser is so against the idea that someone from their community might kidnap a Forest Talker that he will actively work against them should that strategy come to pass and he knows about it, both because he suspects it would lead to retaliation and because it violates personal rights. He doesn't believe anyone here has the right to abduct, imprison, and torture/experiment on another person, no matter what side they're on.

another point from Fraser

(from speaking with Randvi above:)

— He'd also point out that there's plenty of game and resources in Lakeside to go around, and perhaps what they should do instead of raid the caches is put together hunting parties that will a. include enough armed people to discourage attack and b. allow Miltonites to hunt larger animals like moose and bear to bring more food back to the town.

Damian is going to go for the low blow and point out that as a constable, Fraser would have arrested people and had them subjected to the scrutiny of the law, and that this is ethically completely indistinguishable from what he and a few others are suggesting, the only difference being that he plans on releasing the prisoner immediately afterward.

Fraser will point out he acted in his capacity as an officer of the law, within his jurisdiction. None of them have jurisdiction here, and he can't even be sure they're in a close enough version of his Canada to have the same laws as his home country. So the difference lies in the greater context of an overarching legal system, one which he strove to uphold.

In this case, he's perfectly willing to protect and defend, but he's not willing to take the law into his own hands in a place where he has no jurisdiction and no legal backing.

(He will also note that it's not a low blow, it's a perfectly reasonable and logical line of thinking, and he's happy to clarify his position on the matter.)

He'll just point out that there is no law here, and if they're going to ethically lean on the idea of "the law", that falls apart and cripples them when that idea is dead and gone, and leaves them to the whims of pure anarchy. They either need to decide on new laws and means of enforcement themselves or abandon the concept altogether. Frankly, he votes for the latter.

He'll also say that he's technically got some degree of international legal authority as a member of the Justice League. If that matters.

That would only matter if they were in the same world as the Justice League, as far as jurisdiction goes.

But since 'the law' was what allowed him to arrest and detain people before, he might point out it's not him leaning on it here, and in fact he's doing the opposite; he's instead leaning on his own personal ethics, and his personal ethics stand against abduction of another person, especially if that abduction will include messing with their body without their consent. He will probably add that if the Forest Talkers did that to the people in Milton, the Milton folks would likely retaliate. He recommends finding a less aggressive way to collect information.

He fully agrees lmao. He just thought he'd bring it up.

He'll concede the point about acting on his own morals, and say that he too is acting on his own moral guidelines as well. He'll also clarify that messing with their body is an exaggeration, he mostly wants to get a closer look at the state of them, and if at all possible get samples. The rest of it, he will just sort of balk at. The idea that kidnapping someone is like, a line too far is somewhat baffling to the boy who kidnapped a bunch of people because he wanted them to be his friends. It's just putting someone in a situation, calm down?

especially with the kidnapping, that's just very risky when they don't have the men to defend their territory. what are the talkers' numbers? how many of them are fighting men (and women)? are the caches their only sources? they could be lures too!

(side note of sansa thinking "pls do not get killed, you are nice!!!" very loudly in fraser's direction)
