I have no idea who Vincent Van Gogh is, so I'm going to assume you never got into school.

He was a Dutch painter. Died in 1890. Wish we had internet so I could show you his stuff, what he did with colour was actually really beautiful.

[ There's an awkward little pause. ]

... I actually did get accepted into school. Never actually went but, it's true.

Ah that sucks. But it's okay- I literally can't show anyone anything from back where I'm from.

[Except the things that she brought with her, but that doesn't paint much of a picture.]

I'm pretty sure you've mentioned a sister before.

It's not the lie. People keep thinking it is, but he actually is my favourite.

I don't know much about art, but I could recognise a Van Gogh in a line-up, probably. [ Laugh. ] Do you have a favourite work of his?

And as for the lie... your sister must be older? [ He grins. ] For some reason, you give me "big brother" energy.

I like his portraits the most. I know everyone else would say they like Starry Night or Sunflowers or The Bedroom, but his portraits of people and himself are my favourite.

[ There's a long pause. Kieren's mouth is a thin line, a sad kind of humour to him. ]

She's older now. She used to be four years younger.

Yeah, I also have no idea who Van Gogh is. So fuck it, that one's the lie?

He's kinda from your era. Sort of. He wasn't born until 1853.

But nah, that's not the lie.

Mate, I died in 1840something. He's not exactly my era.

To be fair, Queen Victoria was on the throne until like... early 1900s or something. There's a reason why it's called the Victorian Era.

Third one. Sort of. My sister was younger than me. Now she's about to surpass me in age.

It's weird, isn't it. Seeing the entire world pass you by while you're stuck thinking about the past.
