Both. First, I was married by the high septon. Second, I was married in the godswood. I am married in the eyes of both the Old Gods and the New.

So those would be your three names, right? One maiden, two married.

How many brothers do you really have?

Five.

Three by my mother, and my father's bastard, and my father's charge. Just one sister, though she might as well be a brother with her interests.

Father tried his best to keep us mindful of each other.

Two husbands seems poor luck for one so young.

Some might go further and say two husbands with no children is more unfortunate. It could be worse luck.

[ securing claims so often means taking a wife, but what about the wife? sansa's greatest — darkest — consolation is that she doesn't have children to speak of. ]

Unless one is needed to secure the wife’s position, I don't think I would.

You would not mind having no children to carry your lineage, my lady? Or... perhaps the quality of the husband would matter?

[He shrugs with a slight smirk.]

All my siblings are adopted.

Family can be what we make of it, truly.

[ Edward, it's a game... But all of these seem quite personal. ]

If three is the truth, are they names you bear in different situations? Or do all of them belong to you at once?

[ madam. rare is the moment that sansa feels completely taken aback. ]

All three names are mine and not. All three names are given as taken. [ now this sounds like a riddle. ] All three names are true.

How might a girl come about three names, my lord?

[ Likewise, there's a startle to be addressed as "my lord", certainly a first for him in this place. But Edward sobers at the response. He doesn't want to presume anything, certainly, but... given her other statements, some things do add up, and none of them sit comfortably within him. ]

I suppose... if one had been married twice.

[ It really is not his business to intrude upon, and he looks visibly apologetic, dipping his head shyly for a moment. ]

That must mean that two is... the lie?

[ what a curious man. he clearly has an interest, in the statements if not her personally, but he seems to restrain himself from asking as much as might like. out of civility?

I may have bent the rules of the game just a little. All of them are true, in their own ways — just more or less true, in measures. By blood I only have four; my trueborn siblings, and my father's bastard. The fifth is charged upon my father and raised with us.

I would not mind finding them here, my father's charge or bastard. [ flatly: ] The rest of my trueborn siblings are likely dead.

...you seem young to be remarried.

[ His world is a hodgepodge of victorian and modern in some ways. At least in the military, women have the same chances as men; it's a different story for the poor and desperate of course, but marriage wasn't exactly common in the Underground. ]

It was to remarry or be killed, Ser, and I've no father nor champion to speak for me.

[ petyr baelish will pay for his betrayal, in time. wilful or foolish, he will pay, and sansa will thank him for it. ]

[ It's absolutely not the worst thing that can happen to a girl with no one looking out for her; it's really the marriage part of it that puzzles him. Does he even know anyone who's married? Probably some of the kids' parents, maybe. That or the nobles... could it be that she's someone like that? She certainly has a sort of air of elegance around her, despite their dire circumstances, but she seems to lack the callous disregard for other people's suffering most of them carry in his experience. ]

[ Still, it would explain this situation, and the potential multitude of names and brothers. ]

You are from an... influential family, are you not?

My family is in service of one.

[ it's not technically a lie; the starks are bound by their forebears' vows to serve the king of the seven kingdoms. that they themselves are descended from kings need not be mentioned yet. ]

I learned many things from them.

[ Lalo himself has a good deal more, although most of them are burner aliases and fake identities from his espionage days. ]

For now, Ser, only the three. I might find it in myself to earn more by my own talents here.
