Cornelius Hickey | The Terror

[personal profile] friendsfordinner 2024-07-15 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
1: Back home, the bear-God-thing terrorizing the crew, tore two sailors in half and stuck half of one sailor on top of the other sailor like a fucked-up little sandwich.
2: Also back home, the ship's carpenter decided that the best thing to do was to try and set the ship on fire. Thankfully, we've got two, but took out a fair number of the men.
3: Finally back home, we had a funeral for a leg.

Anyway, all this is why it's not too bad here and anyone from my place who complains, doesn't have any right to.

The fire thing sounds too mundane. I'm saying that one.
friendsfordinner: (shithead smile)

[personal profile] friendsfordinner 2024-07-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
The fire thing happened. But it was the surgeon who set a large tent on fire that we all were using for a party.

Yikes. No fun allowed, huh?
friendsfordinner: (just kind of a blank stare)

[personal profile] friendsfordinner 2024-07-16 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Looking back on it, I wonder if there was a root cause. If he knew something the rest of us didn't. Or at least, knew something that the rest of us would soon learn.

He tied the tent shut. He was trying to kill us all at once.

Shit. No wonder Billy got out of that house so fast.
friendsfordinner: (oh hey what's that? a bear?)

[personal profile] friendsfordinner 2024-07-16 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
That house?

[ wait. ]

Fuck, he was in that burning house with you? Hell.

Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me that he got out of there. It was...bad.

..a funeral for a leg?

Well shit, I can't decide. Gun to my head, one or three is the lie. I've known a lotta stupid people.
friendsfordinner: (i am the only person finding this funny)

[personal profile] friendsfordinner 2024-07-16 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Two's the lie. It was the surgeon and he tried to burn down a large tent we were having a fete in.

The leg was the only thing left of the estimable Sir John Franklin after the bear-god-thing shoved his body down a hole in the ice.
goingtobeunwell: (completely fucked)

[personal profile] goingtobeunwell 2024-07-16 02:35 am (UTC)(link)

The ship's carpenter had his face bitten off by the bear.

[ hmm. ]

Even bears need to eat, Ser. Perhaps the other parts lack in fat.
friendsfordinner: (i am the only person finding this funny)

[personal profile] friendsfordinner 2024-07-16 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you guessing that's the lie? That I surely must be making up something as ridiculous as a bear sticking half of one man on top of the different half of a different man?

[personal profile] clothed 2024-07-16 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Not at all. More likely the bear was minding its territory and tore your men apart as warning. Eating limb or torso is only an added benefit.

Just as likely you'll have starved and ate each other, if you knew little of hunting that a bear found you so easily.

You're missing that latter half of the assessment. Bear-god-thing. Regular bears don't have the capability for planning, for being malicious. That thing had both of those and then some.

A bear knows when its children are being taken. A bear knows where its lands begin and end. A bear knows when you are cruel to it. You think poorly of the bear, ser.

[ the mormonts are ever loyal to the starks. bear to direwolf, guarding their own in their shared north. ]

God or not, perhaps you should not traveled so far into its lands. Was there a need for it?

You're thinking poorly of me. Cause of that, I don't know whether you're a stubborn asshole or a stupid one.

It was the only thing left of the eminent Sir John Franklin. And when the captain of the expedition dies, you hold a funeral by any means necessary.

Was any part of that whole expedition that wasn't weird?
friendsfordinner: (i am affronted!!)

[personal profile] friendsfordinner 2024-07-21 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The first year wasn't so bad! It's only when the ships froze in the ice that things went from bad to worse.
